It is his teacher’s responsibility to make sure that he knows what to do. A good teacher will welcome being told that your child has a problem and will either reteach the lesson or give you some tips about how to help your child.

Your child may claim there is not enough homework to fill the full homework time. Even when this is true, there is no reason to cancel homework time. Just turn it into school-focused reading time.
The amount of benefit your child gets from finishing a homework assignment NEVER outweighs the importance of your relationship with your child. The amount of time you spend cajoling and coercing your child to do their work is counterproductive.
